Title: NERDS: National Espionage, Rescue and Defense Society
Author: Michael Buckley
Reviewer: Stephanie
Genre: YA Fiction
Rating: LOVE
Alerts/Warnings: Some action violence, but it is VERY mild.
Premise: Combining all the excitement of international espionage and all the awkwardness of elementary school, NERDS, featuring a group of unpopular students who run a spy network from inside their school, hits the mark. With the help of cutting-edge science, their nerdy qualities are enhanced and transformed into incredible abilities! They battle the Hyena, a former junior beauty pageant contestant turned assassin, and an array of James Bond–style villains, each with an evil plan more diabolical and more ridiculous than the last.
Opinions: I LOVE THIS BOOK! It is different and funny and very creative. I love that what you might perceive as a weakness is actually strengthened so that it becomes a superpower. The characters are a bit extreme and over the top. The story is supposed to not be taken seriously and it is just a fun, fun, fun read. And through it all are real emotions of dealing with bullying and feeling accepted.
