Title: My Fair Godmother
Author: Janette Rallison
Guest Reviewer: Janelle
Genre: YA Fantasy
Rating: Lovelovelove
Alerts/Warnings: None
Premise: High school sophomore Savannah wants to find the perfect prom date after her boyfriend breaks up with her to date her older sister, but when a godmother who is only fair becomes involved, Savannah finds herself in trouble in the Middle Ages, along with a boy who would like to be her charming prince.
Opinions: Hilarious! If you read my blog, you already know that I am enamored with Janette Rallison, and her debut foray into fantasy is no different! Chrysanthemum Everstar, Savannah’s “fair” godmother is a crack-up who throws her goddaughter into the most interesting situations as she misunderstands and misinterprets each of Savannah’s wishes.

Stephanie's Opinions: I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! I laughed so hard and I got a huge kick out of it! Janelle sent us this review and I got it as I was sitting down to review it. Janelle did a great job, I just wanted to put in my plug as well for this FABULOUS book!! My favorite Janette Rallison book!

The Rumpelstiltskin Problem by Vivian Vande Velde

Time's ticking on our Fabulous Giveaway! Have you entered? Go here for all the ways to enter! And don't forget to send us reviews!! All reviews sent before the end of the contest get 5 ENTRIES!!!

Title: The Rumpelstiltskin Problem

Author: Vivan Vande Velde

Reviewer: Stephanie

Genre: YA Fantasy

Rating: Like

Alerts/Warnings: None

Premise: A Collection of variations on the familiar story of a boastful miller and the daughter he claims can spin straw into gold. (King County Library System)

Opinions: I found this book while on a friends website and I thought it sounded intruiguing. However, I thought it was going to be different than it was. I read the prologue, which goes through all the problems of the fairy tale, and I thought it would be a whole book about the discrepencies in fairy tales, specifically Rumpelstiltskin. (PS Whoever came up with the name Rumpelstiltskin never had to write it down!) This book, however, goes through the problems of the story and then offers six alternate stories of how to explain Rumpelstiltskin. Each has a different sympathetic character and different villain. Some have magic, some don't. All are quick reads and a delightfully easy and enjoyable book to read.

Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson

Time is running out to enter our Fabulous Giveaway for a signed copy of Jessica Day George's "Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow". Go here for all the ways you can enter!

Title: Hattie Big Sky
Author: Kirby Larson
Guest Reviewer: Janelle
Genre: YA Historical fiction
Rating: Like
Alerts/Warnings: None

Premise: After inheriting her uncle's homesteading claim in Montana, sixteen-year-old orphan Hattie Brooks travels from Iowa in 1917 to make a home for herself and encounters some unexpected problems related to the war being fought in Europe. Alone in the world, teen-aged Hattie is driven to prove up on her uncle's homesteading claim. For years, sixteen-year-old Hattie's been shuttled between relatives. Tired of being Hattie Here-and-There, she courageously leaves Iowa to prove up on her late uncle's homestead claim near Vida, Montana. With a stubborn stick-to-itiveness, Hattie faces frost, drought and blizzards. Despite many hardships, Hattie forges ahead, sharing her adventures with her friends--especially Charlie, fighting in France--through letters and articles for her hometown paper. Her backbreaking quest for a home is lightened by her neighbors, the Muellers. But she feels threatened by pressure to be a "Loyal" American, forbidding friendships with folks of German descent. Despite everything, Hattie's determined to stay until a tragedy causes her to discover the true meaning of home. (King County Library System)

Opinions: Hattie’s character was rich and real, and I enjoyed the peek into mid-century homesteading life. It may not have ended exactly the way I wanted it to, but it was comforting to see Hattie finally feel like she belonged somewhere.

Princess of the Midnight Ball by Jessica Day George

Don't forget to enter our giveaway! It ends on Friday!!!! Go here for all the ways you can enter!

A note about this post. Karen wrote her review of this book, and then Janelle submitted a review as well. I thought I would include both so you could get both opinions!

Title: Princess of the Midnight Ball
Author: Jessica Day George
Reviewer: Karen
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Rating: Fabulous
Alerts/Warnings: None
Premise: A retelling of the tale of twelve princesses who wear out their shoes dancing every night, and of Galen, a former soldier now working in the king's gardens, who follows them in hopes of breaking the curse. (King County Library)
Opinions: The princesses of Westfalin are forced on an increasingly frequent basis to disappear at night while anyone else in their rooms is forced to sleep. Then they are taken below, no matter their state of health, to the underworld where they must dance for the King Under Stone who says they must dance six years more to fulfill a promise that their mother once made. Once the promise is fulfilled then they are destined to marry his twelve sons in which they dance with. The intriguing part is why.

Galen, a soldier returned from twelve years of war who returns to the family of his mother's after the war and finds work with his uncle tending the Queen's Garden. The King insists that the garden be kept in memory for Queen Maude who long since passed away - though it has quickly become a mockery as the townsfolk rename it the King's Folly. In the garden Galen learns of the curse that has taken hold of the princesses and soon he becomes determined to free them (especially Princess Rose) or die trying.

This is an intriguing retelling of the Twelve Dancing Princess fairytale, but told in a much darker tone. Jessica Day George has not only included the details of the original tail, but added tantalizing twists as the curse of the princesses turns into a national witch hunt when the church launches their own inquiry into the situation and the Archbishop sends a foreign Bishop with his own agenda to investigate the strange happenings in Westfalin. I highly recommend reading this, though on a personal note I still like the version my friend Stephanie wrote better.

Guest Reviewer: Janelle
Rating: Love
Opinions: A rich, colorful retelling of a classic tale. The story was well done, with deep characters and a believable villain. I even felt like I knew all the sisters, which is impressive, seeing as there are twelve.

Dragon Spear by Jessica Day George

Our giveaway is half over! Have you entered yet? If you haven't you should!!! Go here for all the ways you can enter.

As promised, here is the review of Dragon Spear. If you would like to see the reviews of Dragon Slippers and Dragon Flight click on their titles. Coming in the next day or so a review of "Princess of the Midnight Ball" and some other books I'm excited to share.

Title: Dragon Spear
Author: Jessica Day George
Reviewer: Stephanie
Genre: YA Fantasy
Rating: Fabulous!
Alerts/Warnings: None
Premise: Creel's adventures continue when she, her brother, and her betrothed travel across the seas to visit their dragon friends and become involved in a battle against an alien group of dragons that has kidnapped Queen Velika, endangering her and her expected litter of hatchlings. (King County Library System

Opinions: I think this is my favorite book in the series. It wasn't at all what I expected, and I loved the complexity of the new dragons that we meet and the adventure that Creel and Luka go on. I love series that resolve after each book, but you are so glad when the characters come back so that you can see them again, and how they are developing and maturing. This book shows the growth of Creel as a person. This is a fabulous book, and worth reading!

Dragon Flight by Jessica Day George

Several months ago Karen reviewed "Dragon Slippers". Since we are giving away "Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow" by Jessica Day George, we felt it was appropriate to highlight her other books. So here is a review of "Dragon Flight" sequel to "Dragon Slippers". Tommorrow, (okay in the next couple of days) I will post a review of "Dragon Spear" the third book in this awesome series.

Don't forget to enter our giveaway. You have one more week to enter and to send us some reviews. We've gotten some already, and are totally excited to share them with you! Go here for all the ways you can enter.

Title: Dragon Flight
Author: Jessica Day George
Reviewer: Karen
Genre: YA Fantasy
Rating: Fabulous
Alerts/Warnings: none
Premise: Young seamstress Creel finds herself strategizing with the dragon king Shardas once again when a renegade dragon in a distant country launches a war against their country, bringing an entire army of dragons into the mix. (King County Library System)

Opinions: As the second book in her Dragon series, Jessica Day George does a fantastic job carrying on the tale. Her characters are just as vivid, the dragons impressive, and the hint of romance tantalizing. Though the book had a slow start I do believe it was intentional to show Creel's life having become dull after the intensity of the first dragon war. As soon as a threat to the country and her friends arises Creel (as well as the story) leaps into action to help save the day (and do see Luka again). So far I'm thoroughly enjoying reading this series and am excited to see where it leads us. Overall, I think Jessica Day George is a fantastic author and I'm glad for the opportunity to read her work.

Opinions: I LOVE this book. It is based on the fairy tale East of the Sun, West of the Moon. I read this book after reading another book by Jessica George and I loved it so much I went out and bought it the next day. I have owned it for a little over a year and I've probably read it close to 10 times. I just love the characters. This book gives me reading goose bumps, and that just means it's an AWESOME book!!!

House of Secrets by Jeffrey S. Savage

Title: House of Secrets
Author: Jeffrey S. Savage
Reviewer: Karen
Genre: Adult Mystery/Suspense - LDS Fiction
Rating: Like
Alerts/Warnings: Murder
Premise: When Shandra discovers a body, long since dead, in her grandmother's house, which suddenly disappears, she is shocked and determined to solve the mystery. But when she returns with the police, the body is missing - and a new dead body is in its place. And all the evidence points to Shandra. (PG Library System)
Opinions: Shandra Covington is a reporter for the Twin Forks Newspaper in Salt Lake City, Utah. Though she has returned to Echo Lake to put her grandmother's (who died two weeks earlier)house up for sale, she finds her investigation comes into play when she discovers the mummified remains of a body in her grandmother's bedroom. When she goes to the police with the information, she finds herself being arrested for a murder that was committed since she arrived in town. Instead of finding the body that she had told the police about, they had discovered the body of someone else. Once her best friend Bobby, a Salt Lake police officer, sends a lawyer to get her out of jail, Shandra is determined to find out the truth of what happened in her grandmother's home and whether or not her grandmother was involved.

This is an interesting mystery with an incredibly likable, spunky, bullheaded main character. I found it impressive that such a strong female character was written by a male author. I think Jeffrey Savage did a great job. Though I do have to say that even though the story was resolved at the end the author did leave one little twist on the last page making me desperate to read the next story. So not fair, at least its already printed.

Wings by Aprilynne Pike

Title: Wings
Author: Aprilynne Pike
Reviewer: Karen
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Rating: Fabulous
Alerts/Warnings: None
Premise: When a plant blooms out of fifteen-year-old Laurel's back, it leads her to discover the fact that she is a faerie and that she has a crucial role to play in keeping the world safe from the encroaching enemy trolls. (King County Library)
Opinions: Laurel is a fifteen-year old high school student who is starting a new year at a new school after being home schooled all her life as a result of her parents fulfilling a life long dream of owning their own bookstore comes to fruition. Uncomfortable at first, Laurel meets David who instantly befriends her and brings her into his group of friends making her feel right at home. When strange things start happening to Laurel that are not humanly possibly she turns to David and his scientific knowledge to help her work things out only for them both to discover that she is not human, but a plant -- a faerie to be exact. This discovery sends Laurel on a journey to find the truth about her past and what it means to be faerie. It also sends her into the path of trolls, lost friendship, heartache, and life and danger situations.

This is the debut novel for Aprilynne that released in May this year and went to #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list during its second week of sales. I've met Aprilynne at several conferences so I was looking forward to reading her book once it came out. Let me tell you...It's fabulous. Its teenage drama-filled with a magical twist that's new and original. Even my husband liked it. It appears to be marketed for those who like the Twilight Series (you know who you are), but in my personal opinion I like the characters and the overall plot much better than Twilight.

Far World: Water Keep by J. Scott Savage

Sorry for the delay in any updates over the last two weeks. I took a brief reading hiatus after the last giveaway and now I'm back on track.

Title: Far World: Water Keep
Author: J. Scott Savage
Reviewer: Karen
Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Rating: Fabulous
Alerts/Warnings: None
Premise: Found in the desert as a baby by monks who named him, thirteen-year-old Marcus, who has been confined to a wheelchair ever since he can remember, knows nothing of his background and endures the difficulties of his daily life in various foster homes and schools by dreaming of Farworld, a magical place whose pull seems to be getting increasingly stronger.(PG Library System)
Opinions: This is an extremely fascinating take on young adult fantasy where two youth or torn between two separate worlds and trying to travel between Earth and Far World in order to save them both. I love the two main characters, Marcus and Kyja, and the friendship they build as they realize that they need each other in order to survive against the Dark Circle which is striving to destroy them both before they can put an end to the Dark Circle's plans. I also love Kyja's dragon-like friend, Riph Raph the skyte, and his sarcastic nature. The magical characters are imaginative, the scenery incredible, and the storyline intriguing. This is a definite must read, but keep in mind that this is the first book in a series and the only one published at this time. So if you don't like to read series until they are completely finished you might want to wait, because I've read the first book and now I'm on pins and needles waiting for the next installment to be released this fall.
