Premise: When a plant blooms out of fifteen-year-old Laurel's back, it leads her to discover the fact that she is a faerie and that she has a crucial role to play in keeping the world safe from the encroaching enemy trolls. (King County Library)
Opinions: Laurel is a fifteen-year old high school student who is starting a new year at a new school after being home schooled all her life as a result of her parents fulfilling a life long dream of owning their own bookstore comes to fruition. Uncomfortable at first, Laurel meets David who instantly befriends her and brings her into his group of friends making her feel right at home. When strange things start happening to Laurel that are not humanly possibly she turns to David and his scientific knowledge to help her work things out only for them both to discover that she is not human, but a plant -- a faerie to be exact. This discovery sends Laurel on a journey to find the truth about her past and what it means to be faerie. It also sends her into the path of trolls, lost friendship, heartache, and life and danger situations.
This is the debut novel for Aprilynne that released in May this year and went to #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list during its second week of sales. I've met Aprilynne at several conferences so I was looking forward to reading her book once it came out. Let me tell you...It's fabulous. Its teenage drama-filled with a magical twist that's new and original. Even my husband liked it. It appears to be marketed for those who like the Twilight Series (you know who you are), but in my personal opinion I like the characters and the overall plot much better than Twilight.
